A Digital Orthophoto is derived from a digitally processed satellite image, or scanned aerial photograph.

During this process, the locations and brightness values of the resultant pixels are computed to remove the effects of terrain as well as camera altitude and lens distortion at the time of exposure. The digital ortho is cast onto a map projection with the result that it combines the image characteristics of a photograph with the geometric qualities of a map.

The orthophoto mosaic is produced by the geometric and radiometric merging of many individual orthophotos to produce a seamless orthorectified image.

The satellite images used for the construction of orthophotos, usually come from satellites such as SPOT and LandSat.
